This is a sketch for an exhibit illo I’m working on, a portrait of a boy, will be a silhouette shape painted with gouache, ink line work added for features. Not sure if this is the face, may try other references. Was looking for more of a punk, tough look. And I still may decide to make it a portrait of a dog instead.

This is a personal piece about a man called The Ape, kind of a pulp noir, fall from grace type of narrative, a story about failure and resurrection. “Cursed are you among all.” A tragic villain.

I usually use my holiday break as an opportunity to redesign my portfolio site, so here’s this year’s model. This version features an iPad friendly horizontal scroll displaying an eclectic mix of work from the past twenty or so years, showing my full range in one collection, from clean graphic vector work to messy inky drawings and texture.

So if you want a quick overview of the type of work I do, just touch your iPad screen and flick left, and let me know what you find most interesting. Maybe it’s the blue and black one that looks like a cross between a butterfly and a tiger (seen above), or maybe it’s the orange bull with the curvy white horns (near Society of Illustrators Silver winner!), or maybe it’s the guitarist or fireplace or shouting construction worker. cyclist? couch? chandelier? Above is an illustration I made recently for a story about a pug dog. In the story, she approached a worker out of curiosity. Below is a breakdown of the image layers.

This is the un-cropped version.

I wanted to lengthen the original pants I had drawn so I drew two additional pant legs.

I’m finishing up an illustration that includes worker’s shoes. So I put on a pair of my old bulky shoes as a model for the drawing, sat on the couch, propped my feet up on the end table, and drew while I watched my daughter conquer Mario Kart.
